At the witch’s cottage, she harvests one cantaloupe from her garden.
She slices the melon in half and scoops out the seeds from the center.
She gently washes them and their delicate shells are showered by sunlight while momentarily left on the windowsill.
Once dried, the witch cups the seeds in her wrinkled hands and strides across the candlelit room to her black cauldron.
Inside, you can see every universe created slowly spiraling within the dark liquid; every dazzling star shines.
The witch drops the seeds into the cauldron and a smile forms on her face, “Time for new worlds.”
Note: This was supposed to be my second submission for NYC Midnight's Microfiction challenge where my assignment was genre: Fairy Tale and/or Fantasy, action: slicing a melon, word: face, but I was one minute late and couldn't submit it. Nevertheless, I'm still proud of this! Enjoy!
